Characterization of Microstructures.

Abstract

Research related to the characterization of microstructures of various metallic and nonmetallic materials is summarized. Metals included aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, nickel-base superalloys, nonmetallics such as graphite fibers and polymers, titanium matrix composites and ceramics (TiC, sialons). Techniques employed were various types of electron microscopy (TEM, SEM, EPMA), optical microscopy, quantitative metallography, and various heat treatments. Improvements in techniques were made in each method applied. Major subprojects included characterization of titanium powders, examination of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn PM alloy, formulation of a color micrograph method for titanium-hydride determination, and use of new microcomputer methods for stereological analyses of microstructures. The Materials Characterization Facility is described in terms of the physical plant and the methods of operation used in accomplishing the research on microstructures. (Author)
