Rank Correlation Coefficients as Optimality Measures for Ordinal Cluster Methods.

Abstract

Use and misuse of rank correlation coefficients as optimality measures for cluster analysis is investigated. Distributions of some of the more common dissimilarity coefficients on random binary data are established. The distributions of certain rank correlation coefficients between input and output of cluster methods is also investigated for random input data. A statistical model is proposed to deal with this type of question. (Author)
