A Durable, Intermediate Temperature, Direct Reading Heat Flux Transducer for Measurements in Continuous Wind Tunnels

Abstract

The design and development of a high durability, intermediate service temperature (< or = 600 F), direct reading transducer for the measurement of aerodynamic heating in the continuous wind tunnels of the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility is described. This transducer operates on the axial temperature gradient or Schmidt -Boelter measurement concept. Considerable emphasis is placed upon the practical use of finite-element, two-dimensional heat conduction code for analysis of gage behavior rather than the indiscriminate use of invalid exact mathematical solutions. Laboratory evaluation and calibration of prototype transducers at ambient temperature levels varying from 70 to 500 F are discussed. Results of wind tunnel aerodynamic heating measurements using limited numbers of prototype Schmidt- Boelter gages are presented. Recommendations for future work efforts with regard to further development and testing of this measurement concept are discussed.
