Methods for Adjusting Military Pay,

Abstract

Since 1967, military pay has been linked or indexed to changes in General Schedule (GS) salaries via the professional, administrative, technical, and clerical (PATC) index. This effort compares the PATC index to other wage indexes using a set of criteria. They include the similarity of jobs in the military to those in the wage indexes, the timeliness and quality of data contained in the indexes, and the ability of the indexes to maintain real purchasing power. Several existing wage indexes, predominately blue collar, were found to be more appropriate guides for adjusting pay than the PATC index. (Author)
