Sedative-Hypnotics and Human Performance.

Abstract

This paper reviews the published papers that involved presleep ingestion of hypnotics and administration of performance tasks the next day. To be included, studies had to have employed statistical analysis of drug vs. placebo performance and used as marketed hypnotic. Fifty-two studies met all criteria. The study subjects were primarily young noninsomniac males. Insomniacs were studied in only 8 studies. Eleven benzodiazepines, 7 barbiturates, and 7 'other' hypnotics were administered in one or more studies.
