Applications of the DoD World Geodetic System - 1972 to Charting by the Use of a Semi-Automated System.
Abstract
DMA has a semi-automated system that is used to evaluate the horizontal datum of maps and charts for geodetic accuracy. Geodetic control descriptions in the DMAHTC library of holdings are used to make this evaluation. The computer system gives geodetic shifts to source maps, surveys, and charts. The chart is compiled from a panel base with the WGS-72 shifts applied. The final color proof of the chart is evaluated and checked to see if it is on the WGS-72 datum. Several charts will be exhibited and explained from a cartographic point of view as to how they were placed on WGS-72 datum. The exhibited charts are new charts of the Panama Canal and the Pacific coast of Panama. Examples of how the program was used to improve the geodetic accuracy of the charts on the last stage of compilation will be exhibited. (Author)
