Polarization-Independent Optical Waveguide Switch.

Abstract

This highly successful program has resulted in the demonstration of an electrically activated planar waveguide polarization independent switch, one of the key components required to implement signal processing components. These switches operate at a wavelength of 0.83 micron and have optical crosstalk values of less than 20 dB. The switch is based on the delta beta-reversal directional coupler switch. The polarization independence is incorporated in the delta beta reversal switch by tapering the coupling strength of the directional coupler, and by fabricating the waveguides so that the integrated coupling coefficients for TE and TM modes are nearly identical.
