High Speed Sonar Array Depressor Program

Abstract

This report describes a two-year program directed towards the development of a high-speed, lightweight depressor for towing a sonar array from surface ships. The report covers the design, fabrication and model basin test of a half scale model and the design, fabrication, model basin test and at-sea test of a full scale demonstration model. Results of the test program have verified the hydrodynamic performance and demonstrated the ease of handling a lightweight depressor. It is practical for a 265 pound (1180 N) depressor towing a sonar array at 35 knots to develop a depressing force of 7000 pounds (31,000 N). (Author)
