The Character of Modern War: Theory-Doctrine-Practice at the Operational Level

Abstract

This paper deals with the character of modern war at the operational level and how military theory can assist the US Army in the 1980's. The paper covers the process of converting theory to practice in order to enhance the capability to employ military force in support of national policy. A proper military doctrine developed from the study of military theory can provide more assistance in heightening national security than any number of weapons systems, because a realistic theory takes both material and nonmaterial factors into consideration.
