Nitrification Enhancement through pH Control with Rotating Biological Contactors
Abstract
The short and long term effect of pH on the nitrification of domestic wastewater with pilot scale Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC) systems are examined. Alternative alkaline chemicals are evaluated for their ability to enhance the nitrification rate. Findings demonstrate greater nitrification rates at elevated pH levels and similar nitrification rates for various alkaline chemicals. Lime usage increases suspended solids which results in a need for additional settling prior to discharge. Design recommendations are included.
