Models and Mockups as Design Aids. Revision A.

Abstract

This report describes the application of models and mockups as design aids in initially determining or improving control panel layouts and equipment/compartment arrangements to facilitate personnel and personnel/equipment interactions during system operations and maintenance. The report describes how these models and mockups (M&M) have been used, types of M&M and their applications in various phases of the design development cycle, and finally, a description of the use of M&M for man-machine design and design improvements. Three appendices are included in the report and contain: (1) Descriptions of NOSC M&M applications; (2) Examples of M&M specifications; and (3) An M&M characteristics checklist to aid in the preparation of M&M specifications.
