Mammalian Toxicologic Evaluation of Hexachloroethane Smoke Mixture and Red Phosphorus

Abstract

Four red phosphorus samples, three containing oil, were chemically analyzed for conformation to specifications. A hexachloroethane smoke mixture was burned in a laboratory apparatus to confirm that organic combustion products were present. The acute toxicity of one oiled red phosphorus sample was determined. This sample did not produce irritation in rabbits' eyes at a dose of 100 mg. It was also nonirritating to intact or abraded skin of rabbits when applied at doses of 0.5 g per application site under a patch for 24 hours. Dermal application to guinea pigs did not produce skin sensitization. Intradermal treatment of guinea pigs produced a slight irritation response but not sensitization. The oral LD50 in Fischer 344 male and female rats was greater than 10 g/kg.
