Estimating the Demand Uncertainty in Single-Period Inventory Problems Using the Gompertz Curve and the Schmeiser-Deutsch Distribution.

Abstract

The optimal order quantity for the case of uncertainty in the newsboy problem depends on the maximum demand. In previous work it was assumed that the demand distribution was known. In practice, this is often not the case. This study suggests some procedures which can be used to estimate the demand distribution even if data on unsatisfied demands are not available. (Author)
