A Procedure for Determining the Resource Utilization Potential of Coal Ash.

Abstract

A combination of the increased utilization of coal as an energy source and more stringent environmental regulations is creating problems for the disposal of the ash by-product from the combustion of coal. Utilization of the coal ash as an alternate resource has proven to be a partial solution to the problem. The U.S. Air Force coal conversion program will increase coal consumption and the production of coal ash; this has a potential to create a disposal problem for coal-burning bases. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a procedure to aid an engineer in determining the resource utilization potential of the coal ash at the base. The quality and quantity of the ash are the two main factors that affect the resource utilization potential of the ash. These two factors are a function of the nature of the feed coal, and the production, collection, handling, and storage systems utilized at the base. The procedure does not address the determination of the market potential of the ash, but rather its potential to be utilized as an alternate resource. The procedure provides a sequence of steps to follow in determining the resource utilization potential of a coal ash. (Author)
