Problems Plague National Weather Service ADP System.

Abstract

The National Weather Service should halt implementation of its automated data processing and telecommunications system until it more completely resolves the system's problems and clearly establishes that the benefits of full operation are worth the substantial costs. The system is called Automation of Field Operations and Services (AFOS). Problems and recommendations are discussed, GAO conducted this review at the request of Congressman Willis D. Gradison, Jr., who was concerned that implementing the system might not be practical or feasible. (Author)
