Evaluation of Extended Period Forecasting Technique.

Abstract

This report summarizes work performed under contract. Section I is a condensed summary of research results, and briefly outlines the work described in detail in Sections II and III. Section II describes a statistical analysis which correlates characteristic North American weather patterns with solar activity. This will be submitted to the AMS Journal of Applied Meteorology for publication. Section III describes an investigation of persistent weather regimes as associated with characteristic circulation features and solar activity. This will be condensed and submitted to the AMS Monthly Weather Review for publication. Section IV is a paper that was prepared during early stages of the grant period for presentation at the Symposium/Workshop on Solar Terrestrial Influences on Weather and Climate, held at Ohio State University on July 24-28, 1978. It provides an analysis of the current nature of the problem and a description of a proposed mechanism by which variations in solar activity might influence terrestrial circulation systems.
