Mechanisms of Iso-Index Behavior in Materials.

Abstract

This program entailed a theoretical study of the mechanisms in uniaxial crystals that give rise to a dispersion of the birefringence and in particular to the existence of an iso-index point, a wavelength at which the birefringence passes through zero and changes sign. This property has recently been exploited to devise highly selective optical filters for blue/green applications. The main thrust of the effort was to develop a mathematical tool for predicting the dispersive characteristics of the mixed alloy crystal Zn1-xCdxS, based on knowledge of the refractive properties of the component binary crystals ZnS and CdS.
