Dual Career Families within the Coast Guard Officer Corps.

Abstract

Dual career couples are studied and compared with single and dual income families within the Coast Guard officer corps. The purpose of the thesis is to determine the percent of officers in each category and then examine differences among the three lifestyles. It was found that 24.2% of the respondents had dual career families compared to 21.1% of dual income and 54.7% for single income. Significant differences among the three lifestyles were found in the total and planned number of children, the appropriate age of children for the spouse to resume employment, spouse's level of education and how they felt about detailers considering the spouse's employment when determining assignments. Transfers were the biggest problem that dual career families had to cope with. It is concluded that the Coast Guard is doing a good job of managing its personnel based on the high degree of career satisfaction and the number of people who plan on a full 20-year career.
