Characteristics of Single- and Multi-Mode Optical Waveguides.

Abstract

The results of investigations into the properties of single-mode and multimode optical waveguides are summarized. Specific results include propagation constants for fibers of arbitrary cross-section; an experimental study of tapers, truncations and offsets in slab waveguides; the effects of curvature on channel waveguides embedded in layered substrates; a new method for efficient computation of beams propagation in multimode waveguides; and investigation of mode coupling between multimode waveguides.
