The Mobilization of Effort: Sergeants, Patrol Officers, and Productivity in an American Agency.

Abstract

Police officer productivity in American police agencies is examined in terms of how it is influenced through the efforts of first-line supervision. Drawing on participant-observation data, police sergeants are influential in directing the efforts of their police officer subordinates by virtue of their use of (1) small favors; (2) disciplinary protection; and (3) symbolic (and behavioral) legitimation. Implications are drawn in light of current police management practices. (Author)
