Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Production Armor Plate Welds

Abstract

The work reported herein is the Phase 2 of a planned 3-Phase program to establish Acoustic Emission (AE) as a means to inspect armor plate welds, to provide a means of overcoming the intrinsic disadvantages of the standard weld inspection techniques of radiography and ultrasonics. The first program phase, completed in October 1979, established the feasibility of using AE for this application by monitoring the laboratory welding of armor plate with the controlled induction of critical flaws.
