Organization of an Oceanographic Data Bank for the Peruvian Navy.

Abstract

Oceanographic data have been acquired along the coast of Peru for several decades. This information is important due to the effect of the cold northward Peru Current and Undercurrent and the intermittent warm 'El Nino' countercurrent along the coast of Peru. These two phenomena greatly affect the fishing grounds along the coast as well as the characteristics of sound propagation in the sea due to changes in the vertical thermal structure of the water column. The creation of an oceanographic data bank for the Peruvian Navy is proposed for the archival from various sources of all available historical data for the waters near Peru. The data bank will be updated by a long term program of oceanographic data acquisition and exchange with local and foreign institutions. These data will be stored in an easily accessible format that can be useful for the Navy in creating operational products for the fleet and in monitoring and eventually predicting the ocean variability along the coast of Peru. Some of the applications of the data bank for the Navy, fisheries and other potential users are presented. (Author)
