Stability Theory of a Confined Toroidal Plasma. Part II. Modified Energy Principle and Growth Rate.

Abstract

Based upon the existence and uniqueness of a solution to the linearized Lundquist equations established previously, the modified energy principle for the sigma-stability of a confined toroidal plasma is rigorously justified. A variational principle is developed to find the infimum of sigma, and an estimate for the maximum growth rate is obtained. The results are also extended to a diffuse pinch and a multiple tori plasma. (Author)
