Gas Foil Bearing Development Program.

Abstract

This document presents the final technical report for the nineteen-month gas foil bearing development program. The 3.5-inch foil bearing design was analyzed using an elasto-hydrodynamic analysis program. Bearing configurations with 10 and 8 foils were identified as having the potential to exceed the performance of the 12-foil GTCP165 APU bearing. A total of six bearing configurations were tested, two ambient temperature configurations using Teflon-S coated foils with a chrome-plated journal, and four with high-temperature foil and journal coatings. The high-temperature bearings used foil coatings Kaman DES, Kaman DES + au, Co-20 Ni, and TiC, all of which were run with a Kaman SCA-coated journal. Program goals were met with both ambient-temperature bearing configurations and Kaman SCA versus Kaman DES and TiC high-temperature configurations.
