MODIFY: A Machine-Independent Maintenance Program.

Abstract

It is not uncommon for an organization to maintain a set of files on two or more different computer systems. Each system has its own way of allowing the user to make changes to the files, forcing users not only to know those unique procedures but to make duplicate changes for each system. Making the same changes to the same files on different computer systems requires additional time and increases the risk of making errors. This paper presents the procedures, considerations, and design decisions made, leading to the implementation of MODIFY, a machine-independent batch utility designed to assist programmers in maintaining source files. MODIFY, which is written in standard FORTRAN 77, handles routine update/retrieval functions and provides a complete audit trail of changes. (Author)
