Frequency Response Characteristics of Military Vehicles.

Abstract

Empirical frequency response characteristics are calculated from the dynamic response data obtained from vehicles that are crossing obstacles. The frequency response signature for a vehicle is essentially the ratio of the power spectrum of the dynamic response of a vehicle to the power spectrum of the terrain feature producing the response. This study determines the acceleration frequency response signatures by calculating the Fourier series representation of the acceleration measured at a point on the vehicle as it crosses an obstacle and the Fourier series representation of the obstacle profile. The Fourier series representation of the measured acceleration is obtained by the fast Fourier transform algorithm. A numerical analysis was done for the M114 track vehicle. The empirical frequency response signature obtained for a vehicle from an obstacle crossing test can be used to predict the dynamic response of that vehicle for any other obstacle or terrain feature.
