A New Stratified Towing Channel at NRL.

Abstract

A brine stratified towing channel has been constructed at NRL at part of the Marine and Environmental Hydrodynamics Laboratory. The channel is 3 ft. deep x 4 ft. wide x 60 ft. long and has clear walls and floors over most of its length. The dual carriage towing system is cable driven from a single variable speed D.C. motor and has a basic speed range of 1 to 24 in/sec. A variety of towing arrangements are available. A semiautomatic stratification system can produce an unlimited range of stable density profiles within the channel.
