Effects of Generalization and Specialization on the Development of Commanders

Abstract

This essay covers the proper mix of generalists and specialists in the Army's Officer Corps. A historical summary is presented on the development of generalists--specialists over the past 30 years. Current management techniques/programs/systems are analyzed and discussed, pointing up strengths and weaknesses in them. Army studies influencing the current direction are discussed as they relate to the focus of the study.
