INFOSAM: A Sample Database Management System.

Abstract

This thesis describes the design and implementation of a relational database management system called INFOSAM. Its design is largely based on Madnick's proposed design for a Database Management System <Madnick 79>. Its design incorporates the concept of hierarchical decomposition, whereby the system is organized into levels or groups of modules which share a common function or view of the data. The levels are hierarchically related such that a given level is largely implemented through the services provided by the next lower level. INFOSAM incorporates 3 major levels, which are primarily distinguished by their view of the data. They are the External level, the Nset level and the Internal level. The objective of this stratification is to provide a high degree of data independence for the user, and a low level of functional redundancy in the system. (Author)
