A General Climatological Guide to Daily Freezing Conditions: Frost Days, Ice Days, and Freeze-Thaw Days

Abstract

Climatological information concerning daily freezing conditions is of considerable interest to military and civilian communities because of the impact of such conditions on traffic mobility, personnel performance, and equipment function. In support of strategic planning, this report presents a series of maps showing the geographical distributions of the annual incidence of frost days, ice days, and freeze-thaw days, respectively, over an extensive area of the Northern Hemisphere (Europe and U.S.S.R.). In addition, a number of simple climatological guides are provided whereby the above parameters, if required, might be conveniently derived from ordinarily available data, either for a given area or a single station.
