An Experimental Study of the Transonic Equivalence Rule with Lift,

Abstract

The transonic equivalence rule with lift has been studied experimentally. Under the conditions defined by the rule, wing-body models with the same cross-sectional area distribution but with wings of different aspect ratios and thicknesses were tested at transonic speeds. The correlations of the lift depending wave drag and the lift parameter for the models are found to be similar. The similitude of the outer flow field under the same lifting condition is also established. The drag-rise of the equivalent body of revolution with the cross-sectional area distribution including that due to lift correlates well with those of the wing-body models at the design lift condition. The experiment therefore verifies the transonic equivalence rule at lifting condition. (Author)
