TRIDENT Submarine Logistics Data System (LDS): A Case Study in Life Cycle Management and Budgeting.

Abstract

As a method of controlling the rapidly rising costs and schedule delays plaguing software systems; Department of Defense (DOD) has implemented the concept of life cycle management for automated information systems (AIS). This thesis analyzes the DOD life cycle management directives through the development of the TRIDENT Submarine Logistics Data System AIS. Specifically, it examines DOD software life cycle phasing and studies the cost and schedule variance guidelines established by the life cycle management directives. This thesis points out an apparent need for clarifying the DOD guidelines and a refining of the life cycle documentation requirements. (Author)
