Photoelectrochemical Cells Based on n-GaAs and the Cu(II)/Cu(I) Redox Couple in Acetonitrile.

Abstract

In acetonitrile, the potential of the Cu (II)/Cu(I) redox couple is very dependent on the coordinating strength of the anion present. In the presence of perchlorate or nitrate, the potential is not within the GaAs band gap, and the redox couple does not stabilize GaAs with respect to photodecomposition. Chloride ion, which coordinates with both cations, shifts the potential within the band gap and stabilization of the semiconductor can be obtained. (Author)
