Visualization Study of Turbulent Spots.

Abstract

An experimental investigation was conducted in the Flow Research 18-m towing tank to study turbulent spots evolving in laminar boundary layers and to modulate the resulting flow fields using salinity stratification, polymer, or unsteady boundary conditions. The research was directed towards understanding the different processes occurring during transition and the similarities, if any, between those processes and the intermittent events that characterize the wall region of fully-developed turbulent boundary layers.
