Interim Scientific Report on Contract AFOSR-81-0093 for the Period March 15, to June 30, 1982,

Abstract

This interim report summarizes accomplishments supported by AFOSR Contract No. 81-0093 during the period March 15, 1981 to June 30, 1982. During this initial phase of the contract, an electric field dominated plasma facility was designed, assembled, and put into operation. It consists of a steady state Penning discharge operating in a water-cooled magnet system which is capable of up to 0.4 Tesla. The high voltage power supply, magnet system, cooling water, and vacuum system have been assembled, and the first plasma was achieved. Diagnostic systems which have been put into operation thus far include spectrum analyzers to examine RF emissions to 28 GHz and a retarding potential energy analyzer. The plasma has operated for hours at a time, has exhibited a broad-band RF white-noise spectrum over frequencies from 0.5 MHz to 1.0 GHz; has produced ions with characteristic energies along the field lines of several hundred electron volts; and has exhibited evidence of strong parallel electric fields in the plasma. This plasma promises to be a rich source of information and data on physical processes in electric field dominated plasmas. (Author)
