On the Prospects for Artificially Inducing Equatorial Spread F.

Abstract

The possibility of artificially inducing the onset of equatorial spread F by the collision dominated Rayleigh-Taylor or ExB gradient drift instability mechanism via a hypothetical chemical release in the equatorial ionosphere is considered. Each of the factors affecting the outcome of such an experiment is examined, and recommendations are made with the goal of maximizing the chances of successfully triggering the instabilities.
