The Impact of Data Rates on the Design of a Fiber Optics Guidance System.

Abstract

The data rate requirement of the optical fiber communication link for a missile guidance system has been evaluated. The data rate requirement is determined by the imaging seeker, sensors, and missile control system. The data rate limitations of the currently employed multimode optical fiber are determined for a specific signal-to-noise ratio using pulse frequency modulation. Available optical sources and detectors are evaluated, considering the effects of operating wavelength on fiber loss and dispersion characteristics. The effects of the fiber payout system on the fiber loss and dispersion characteristics are determined for both multimode and single-mode fiber. The use of optical multiplexing techniques to enhance fiber data rate is investigated. Recommendations are made for the most reliable, cost-effective approach for fiber optic missile guidance systems. (Author)
