Linear Stability of the Modified Betatron.

Abstract

The linear stability of the modified betatron is investigated by deriving and numerically solving a dispersion relation. For nonresistive modes, growth rates significantly larger than those of previous calculations are obtained. The effects of a thermal spread in beam energy is estimated, and we conclude that there will be significant Landau damping of the most dangerous nonresistive and resistive modes. (Author)
