Development of Curves for Estimating Aircraft Arresting Hook Loads

Abstract

This Technical Information Memorandum was written to provide AFFTC engineers with a reliable, accurate method for predicting maximum aircraft arresting hook loads based on a knowledge of aircraft weight and ground speed at the moment of cable engagement. Possible causes of excessive data dispersion are discussed and guidelines for minimizing dispersion are provided. Families of curves relating hook load and ground speed which fit BAK-12ER and BAK-13 arresting system test data are derived and confidence intervals are applied. The information provided in this TIM will be of interest to those involved with the design, fabrication, testing and/or operation of aircraft arresting systems.
