Technical Studies in Support of the Design of a Cloud Water Content Meter and Hydrometeor Spectrometer.

Abstract

Theoretical, computational and literature survey studies in support of the design of novel airborne cloud water content and hydrometeor spectrometer instruments are reported. Measurements depend on momentum effects of impacted hydrometeors that are retained temporarily on flat, annular, rotating surfaces mounted normal to the airplane flight path. The studies are of three types: calculation of flow fields and water drop trajectories; analyses of dynamic pressure distributions across, and total torque on, the vanes which rotate the annuli; and hydrometeor impact effects.
