Preliminary Investigation of a Proposed Pearl River Cutoff through the Old Jackson Sanitary Landfill.

Abstract

Solutions are presently being sought to reduce flooding along the Pearl river in the Jackson, Miss. area. Geotechnical considerations for one particular alternative are reported herein. A cutoff channel through the old Jackson Sanitary landfill would considerably reduce the stage of the Pearl River. Problems stemming from environmental restrictions might include lining the channel with a low permeability material to prevent leachate infiltration from the landfill into the river. Soil borings were made and samples obtained at various depths along the center line to characterize the existing soil conditions. Stability analyses were performed for the desired side slopes. Quantities of cut and required backfill were computed based on cross section and profile data obtained along the proposed center line. Results from this report will be used by the U.S. Army Engineer District, Mobile in preparing a cost estimate to be used in a feasibility study for this proposed Pearl River cutoff channel. (Author)
