Low-Cost Navigation Systems for Long-Life Drifting Buoys.
Abstract
Fourteen off-the-shelf navigation systems were considered for use in long-life, drifting buoys to provide localization information. Cost, power consumption, accuracy, capability for remote initilization, and packaging suitability for buoy use were used as criteria in the evaluation. Three U.S. -manufactured systems were selected in a two-stage preliminary review; two of these systems were purchased and tested in a laboratory and the other was evaluated on the basis of technical information supplied by the manufacturer. All three systems, the Magnavox MX-4102; the Navigation Communiction Systems Meridian unit, and the Tracor Bridgestar, met or exceeded the criteria for long-life drifting buoy use. An at-sea test is recommended as the next step in demonstrating their suitability.
