Data Communications Support for the ATC Computer Replacement Program (1988-1996).
Abstract
This study provides a look-ahead to the data communications capabilities needed during the FAA's Enroute Computer Replacement Program (CRP). The support of normal ATC functions and the planned Advanced EnRoute Automation (AERA) functions are considered in addition to the computer replacement requirements themselves. A mixture of packet-switched and dedicated networks utilizing both terrestrial and satellite facilites was found to be the most attractive approach to provide such support. The terrestrial packet-switched network should be highly interconnected with switches in each center and should provide virtual circuit and alternate routing capabilities between all centers. Concentration or multiplexing should also be considered at major air terminals. Results of this task also provide feedback on the data communications impact of the concepts related to Center Backup and Terminal Consolidation. (Author)
