A Probabilistic Mechanical Design and Analysis Technique.

Abstract

This report summarizes practical procedures for the estimation of structural reliability. Starting from the elementary level, the theories of probability and random processes are reviewed. The concepts underlying reliability analysis are discussed. Reliability analyses of statistically and dynamically loaded structures are discussed. Common assumptions used to make structural reliability analyses executable are given. And a criterion that can be used to determine which structural elements are critical to the reliability of a structure is developed. The reliability analysis computer program, FSR, is discussed and the inputs required to run this program are summarized. The results of some numerical examples are summarized. Recommendations for future work in structural reliability analysis are provided.
