Noncyanide Plating and Derusting Processes for Pollution Abatement

Abstract

This project was undertaken to eliminate pollution of wastewater effluent caused by electroplating operations using cyanide-based plating solutions. Noncyanide derusting and plating baths were investigated to compare their ability to perform as well as the cyanide-based counterparts. Suitable materials were found and noncyanide derusting as well as noncyanide cadmium and copper plating were implemented in Rock Island Arsenal's production plating facility. All cyanide-based baths were removed from the plating production area and were properly disposed of in compliance with pertinent regulations.
