Summary of Repair Techniques for Aluminum Bridging.
Abstract
This report provides the results of an investigation designed to recommend joining processes which could be used in the field to repair aluminum bridging. A literature search was conducted to identify the various aluminum repair processes available. The merits of each method as a field procedure were then evaluated. The available systems identified were gas metal-arc welding, shielded metal-arc welding, gas tungsten-arc welding, gas welding, resistance spot welding, adhesive bonding, electron beam and laser welding, explosion welding, and ultrasonic welding. These processes were evaluated in terms of their strength, corrosion resistance, ease of use, safety, whether their equipment was adaptable to use in the field, and economy. Based on these criteria, four processes were identified as being acceptable for use in the field. These were: gas metal-arc welding, gas tungsten-arc welding, adhesive bonding, and explosion welding.
