Material Requirements Planning and Logistic Support for a Field Service Organization: A 'Real World' Example.

Abstract

In an effort to better understand the problems and advantages of utilizing commercial contract service support for complex military electronics systems, the author seeks to analyze a large electronic equipment manufacturer's inventory management system as it is used to support a field service division. A cost analysis of plausible shipping and storage strategies is performed. The complexities of adapting a material requirements planning system to provide improved inventory management for the unscheduled demands of a service organization, are discussed. The report includes a series of memorandums to the company recommending pragmatic solutions to the problems. The company has implemented the recommendations. (Author)
