Coherent Structures in Turbulent Boundary Layers.

Abstract

Experimental investigations to determine the characteristics of the important coherent motions in turbulent boundary layers have been performed. Using simultaneous flow visualization and hot-wire anemometry, all motions have been detected and simultaneously quantified. Two coherent motions, one in the outer region and one in the wall region are important in the Reynolds number range R0 less than 4000. The important outer region eddy is a vortex ring like microscale eddy. (Author)
