Noise Pollution Aspects of Barge, Railroad, and Truck Transportation,

Abstract

Transportation noises are the major source of noise in urban environs, accounting for three-fourths of the noise level urban dwellers experience. Barge generated noises do not rank as intrusive as that of trains and heavy trucks, some reasons include: barges are less numerous; barges are slower and do not generate high db levels from interaction with water surface as trucks or trains produce in interaction with pavement or steel tracks; the barge channel is often 450 feet from shore; and rivers tend to have natural sound barriers such as bluffs and riparian vegetation.
