Monotonicity in Selection Problems: A Unified Approach.

Abstract

Let X (approximation) = (Xl, ...,Xn) have a density g(x (approximation), lambda (approximation) which is decreasing in transposition, where lambda (approximation) = (lambda l, ..., lambda n). Suppose one wishes to select a subset of (l, ..., n) containing the subscripts associated with the largest values of the lambda i's. Let S(x approximation) be a permutation invariant selection rule which always selects a subset associated with the largest values of the X i ('sprine). (Author)
